A flatbed, sometimes called a rollback, tilts its whole bed down to the ground so the vehicle can be winched or driven onto it. All four wheels ride off the road. A wheel-lift truck instead raises one end of the car and lets the other two wheels roll.
When a flatbed is the right truck
- All-wheel drive and many four-wheel-drive vehicles. Subarus, many crossovers and AWD sedans are common in the Denver area, and owner's manuals for many of them warn against towing with two wheels on the ground.
- Lowered, low-clearance or classic cars that could scrape or be damaged by a lift.
- Accident damage to wheels, axles or steering, where the car cannot roll straight.
- Non-running junk cars with flat tires, locked brakes or missing wheels.
- Long-distance moves where you want no extra wear on the drivetrain.
When a wheel-lift works fine
Short tows of front-wheel-drive cars, and moves out of tight spots where a long flatbed cannot fit, such as some parking garages and narrow alleys.
Tell the operator up front
Mention the drive type, any ground-clearance concerns, and whether the car rolls and steers. That decides which truck gets sent and avoids a second trip.
