A flat on the shoulder of I-25 or a slow leak in a parking lot needs a different response. Here is how to handle both.
Get to a safe spot first
Driving on a flat can ruin the wheel, so pull off as soon as it is safe, but do not stop in a travel lane. On a highway, take the next exit or the widest shoulder you can reach and turn on your hazards.
When a spare will do
If you have a spare with air in it, a jack and the wheel lock key, a roadside tire change gets you to a tire shop. Compact "donut" spares are made for short distances at reduced speed, so plan to replace or repair the tire soon.
When you need a tow
- No spare, a flat spare, or a missing wheel lock key
- More than one flat tire
- A bent wheel or damage from a pothole or curb
- Run-flat tires that have already been driven on flat

Repair or replace?
A tire shop decides whether a puncture can be patched. Damage to the sidewall or a tire driven on while flat usually means replacement. Used tires can be an affordable option for older cars; ask the shop.
