A clicking starter, a dashboard that flickers, or total silence when you turn the key usually means a weak or dead battery. A jump start is often all it takes to get moving.
Why batteries fail here
Cold reduces a battery's ability to deliver current, and Denver's sudden cold snaps catch older batteries that were barely hanging on in fall. Short trips that never fully recharge the battery, interior lights left on, and aging terminals make it worse.
What a jump start can and cannot fix
- A jump will start most cars with a discharged battery.
- If the car dies again soon after, the battery may not be holding a charge or the alternator may not be charging it. Have it tested at a parts store or shop.
- If the car will not start even with a jump, the problem may be the starter, fuel or something else, and a tow to a shop is the next step.
Before help arrives
Turn off lights, heater and accessories. If you see corrosion on the battery terminals or smell something like rotten eggs, do not touch the battery; tell the operator. Never jump a battery that is cracked or leaking.
Battery replacement
If the battery is done, ask the operator whether they can bring a replacement or tow you to a shop that can. Other roadside help, like lockouts and fuel, is on the roadside assistance page.
