After a crash, safety and the law come before the tow. Here is the order of operations, then how the tow itself works.
Right after the crash
- If anyone is hurt, call 911 and do not move injured people.
- Colorado's Move It law: under C.R.S. 42-4-1602, when a crash on the traveled portion, median or ramp of a divided highway leaves every vehicle safely drivable, drivers must move as soon as practicable to a frontage road, nearby cross street or other suitable place to exchange information.
- Turn on hazard lights. Colorado's Move Over law requires passing drivers to move over a lane or slow down for stopped vehicles showing hazards, but do not count on everyone obeying it.
When the car cannot be driven
Once police have cleared the scene, request a tow and say where the car should go: your home, your body shop, or a shop your insurance company names. Ask about storage if the shop is closed. Damaged wheels or suspension usually mean a flatbed.
If the car is totaled
If your insurer declares it a total loss and you keep the salvage, or the car is not worth repairing, it may still have value to a recycler. Ask for a cash offer.
Police-ordered tows
If police order a tow, the process and fees differ from a tow you arrange. The PUC's towing consumer page explains your rights for law enforcement and private property tows.
